One year ago today, we announced an idea that grew into a movement.
On May 7, 2025, Stella’s 9th birthday, the campaign to build Milwaukee’s first universally accessible playground officially launched. In the year since, this community has done something remarkable: raised $1.2 million, engaged dozens of disability advocates and families to shape the design, finalized construction documents and set a course for site work to begin this summer.
This year, Stella turns 10! And we want to celebrate by bringing her playground one step closer to opening day. Today, we’re asking our community to come together for a one-day fundraising push to raise $10,000+. Every dollar counts. Every share matters. Every gift, of any size, is a birthday present to Stella and to every child in Milwaukee who deserves a place to play, regardless of ability.
A Year of Building More Than a Playground
This past year wasn’t just about raising money, it was about listening. The Stella’s Playground Community Engagement Committee held numerous conversations with disability advocates, therapists, educators, adaptive sports athletes, and Milwaukee families, making sure every design decision reflects the real needs of the kids and families who’ll use this space.
That work shows in the newest design renderings, which feature continuous accessible routes connecting all major play areas, sensory features, quiet spaces, tactile path indicators for independent navigation, and dedicated rest stops throughout the park.
This is what it looks like when a community builds something together.
What’s Next
The project is entering its most exciting phase yet. Construction documents are finalized, site work at Kilbourn Reservoir Park begins late this summer, and major construction runs through early 2027. With $1.2 million raised toward a $2 million goal, the finish line is in sight, and your gift today will help get us there.
Give $10 for Stella’s 10th. Give $100. Give what you can.
Let’s show Stella – and every family who’s been waiting and hoping – just how much Milwaukee cares. Donate Now!
