Stella’s Story

In July of 2023, a cancerous tumor was found in her brain. Despite the unimaginable hardships of this diagnosis, Stella has continued to be her brave, thoughtful self throughout her treatment, showing levels of strength that leave the grown ups around her in awe. When asked if she felt tired from balancing school, therapies, and treatments, Stella stated, “Tired is not a word I use.”
As a third-grader, she has received amazing support from her community, inclusive of teachers, doctors, and therapists, and has continued to grow and explore as a child should—assisted by a walker, large-print books, and an individualized education plan.
One day, Stella and her family went to the park. When her brother excitedly ran to the playground, her mom asked Stella if she wanted to join. Stella said, “that’s not for me.” It was at that moment that Stella’s mom made a promise: to build her a playground that is for her.
But Stella’s Playground is not just a promise to her; it is a promise to our entire Milwaukee community that NO child will need to utter the words “that playground isn’t for me.”

We’ve learned through Stella’s journey that unfortunately, most playgrounds do not cater to everyone’s abilities or needs. We were inspired by Stella to build the very first universally accessible, inclusive playground in the City of Milwaukee.
Our vision is for this playground to be known as a destination where everyone belongs; a place that inspires families and friends of all abilities to go outside, connect with the community and with nature, and embrace one another for who they are. Because we believe that the best lessons—such as compassion, kindness, and acceptance—are learned on the playground.
Stella means Star. Stella’s playground, located in Reservoir Park with a beautiful view of the city and the sunset, will be a shining star for all in our community and an example of the very best we can give to Stella, her friends, and neighbors.
Our goal is to create a happy, playful, welcoming atmosphere that reflects Stella’s caring heart and creative personality. It is important that this park has more than just an outstanding accessible playground. We plan to have something to engage everyone, from inclusive basketball courts to musical features and creative play spaces.
